The Marathon of Life ... 2006

It’s been a long marathon
After years of training time
The mind and body all aligned
To cross the finish line

The course ridden with ups and downs
That previous runners hadn’t seen
The scorching sun to drain your run
And wind against your face

As you’re entering your last lap
Your muscles are beginning to cramp
The throat is parched from the heat
The mind is beginning to warp

Runner, keep only one thing in sight
The yellow of the ribbon line
We’re waiting with water and juice
And to carry you to your prize

Let not thoughts wander your mind,
They need to spur your legs
There’s only one more turn to run
In spite of the wear and tear

Come, Runner, says the finish line
I’ve waited for you so long
‘Tis not the time to slow down
Nor look back to the starting time

This has been your race of a lifetime
Your cheerleaders are full of pride
That you held your own and fought the odds
And came this close to the line

Find that last spurt of energy
And keep your pace, Runner
That one last push, that one firm step
And you’ll thank yourself forever
