Friends ... and foes ... 2008

As life continues its merry journey - with its small turns of the road, and scenic overlooks - it is amusing to witness behaviors of creatures in the jungles. No wise human has deliberately chosen to incite a creature in the wild. But, there continue to be snake bites, sharks severing human limbs, bears mauling unsuspecting travelers, and elephants trampling on benevolent caretakers. I am no animal psychologist, but have often wondered what must be transpiring in the minds of such organisms. The conclusion I reach is that they fight their own perceptions of fear, control, transgression, pride - manifestations of ego, as we call it in "civilized" humanity.

And, as humans, are we very different? Don't we create our enemies in our own minds, and go after them with a vengeance? Haven't we coined the phrase "finite sum game" and chosen to lead lives driven by scarcity rather than avail of the abundance? Haven't we stroked our egos to the point of driving us to the point of insanity rather than fuel entrepreneurship and progress?

Our over-developed brains must have a better application. Self-restraint. Respect for the individuality of others. Focus on improving ourselves. Managing our own phobias and insecurities.

Unless we consciously embark on a self-awareness journey, we will continue to be animals of the wild who carry our polluted minds into the facades of spiritual discourses, meditate with eyes closed but venomous thoughts, and chant mantras with profanity racing in our minds.

May Darwin save our souls!
