I think, therefore I am ... 2010

In the continuing quest for an answer to the "Who am I" question, I ponder Descartes' famous quote, "Cogito ergo sum" - "I think, therefore I am." The question Descartes answers for me is "Why am I?" We can all agree that each of us lives in a world that is a construct in our thought - a result of our ability to think. Thus, every question exists in our thought, and any answers we have exist in our thought, as well! That includes "Who am I" and any answer to that question.

I am what I think I am. I am capable if I think I am capable. (Do you remember the philosophy taught in American schools to kinder-garteners - to say and believe, "I think I can") I am incapable if I think I am incapable. Thus, it becomes a matter of choice and a "truth" that I can create for myself. I can choose to be happy; I can choose to be sad. I can choose to be elated; I can choose feel low. I can choose to be stable; I can choose to be volatile.

I can choose to know who I am; I can choose to keep groping in the dark. Without batting an eyelid, I choose the former.

Thus, I propose an answer to "Who am I?":

What I think, is who I am.
