Baggage Restrictions ... 2011

We have seen airlines impose significant baggage restrictions in recent years - checked-in baggage is not free on domestic flights, and no more than one free checked-in on many international flights.

Isn't it ironic that we strive to live our lives without baggage, but feel constrained when encouraged to travel light? Look at all the paraphernalia of ones longings and belongings, assets and liabilities, and self-perceived value in the context of wants and needs. Our lives of greed have blurred the distinction between wants and needs - we have a "need" for a cell phone, we have a "need" for the internet, we have a "need" for a brand-name car, to name just a few. Are we really true to ourselves when we say we like to live a light life? It is so easy to talk about living light, not so easy to shed the baggage until the moment of reckoning.

Isn't it enough that we add 100+ lbs from the time of birth to the time of death? The ego-less child with minimal needs is corrupted through life to want more and more and more. A good friend of mine suggested a negative correlation between ones happiness and desires; because desires are destined to remain unfulfilled.

The time has come to take cues from airline policies. If it doesn't fit in your carry-on, most likely you don't need it! The less baggage you check-in, the less is the probability of its arriving late or not at all; less is the irritation that you have to live without something that you didn't really need!

Thank you, airlines!

As a fairly decent frequent flyer, I cannot fathom how and why people have to carry so much. That's just the travel part.

On the life part, I am from the more the merrier side of the aisle.

Nicely written, Aseem.
