Are Winners Winners and Losers Losers? ... 2011

Thanks to a dear niece, I have been re-introduced to the world of international cricket; and I must, in advance, thank her for the gesture - the experience there from I have thoroughly enjoyed! Watching what was considered a nail-biting finish to the 2011 World Cup, and witnessing the jubilation of a billion-plus people has, really, put me in a not-so-favorable perspective about what winning means in our world. What is loud and clear is that humanity is still rooted deep in its primal tendencies of measuring a win against another's loss. There were two teams - one scored 274 in 50 overs, and the other matched that score in 48.2 overs to declare themselves victorious! Statisticians (ie, practitioners of the mathematical field of statistics, not the custodians of historical cricket scores) will agree with me that the performances of the two teams will not be found to be statistically significantly different! Yet, there is a primal metric that drove behavior, and it is causing one huge nation to revel over another tiny one. Isn't it about time that we demonstrate our Darwinian evolution to win over ourselves to be better human beings; overcome our blind spots by first becoming aware of our ignorance, and then conquering them; declare victory on ourselves to contribute our tiny bit to world evolution? Win-win is definitely a better proposition than win-lose. What say?

In principle, this sounds good.

But let's not forget. Contrast in life - as in everything - is a must. White in contrast with black (or vice versa) is appealing. Joy is meaningless if there is no sorrow to comapare it with. What are Wins if there are no losses.
Win-Win is forgotten, win-loss is not!
If there was always win-win, words like more, better - let alone most and best would not exist.
